The other day I went to check out the paleolithic site of Terra Amata. Terra Amata is thought by its excavators to be a Homo erectus kill site. Evidence of tools, huts & hearths have been found at the site and dated to between 450,000 and 380,000 years ago. Now the site consists of a small museum situated below a modern apartment complex.

Inside the museum they have a huge cast that was made of the site floor, along with replicas of one of the structures that is thought to have existed there:

(Note the wireframe hominin inside.)

There were also a few fantastic small display cases with little H. erectus figures going about their H. erectus lives:

A big part of the museum was devoted to the site of Dmanisi. They had posters on the walls explaining the site, casts of some of the skulls found there, and a reconstruction of 2 of the Dmanisi hominins. Made me nostalgic for my Dmanisi days.

I also took a daytrip to Monte Carlo.

Saw the royal palace:

and the casino:

People, we need to talk about the commenting. You need to comment!! I'm having fun, but travelling alone for so long can be lonely! Comments on my blog post make me happy. Besides the old man I met at the Menton train station (who told me that it sounds like a song when I speak French. Aww,he was a sweet, but obviously senile, old man) and the creepy guys who hang out by the water and follow me around the old town, trying to get me to have tea with them, I have nobody to talk to. I like my alone time, but I'm a social creature! Talk to me! I'll see friends in a week or so, but until then, post a comment! Yes, I'm talking to you.

Oh yeah -- and I'm totally speaking French. Most of the time I'm making it up as I go along, but people seem to understand me...

The other night I watched the French version of American Idol (it's called Nouvelle Star.) Gael is totally going to win. He sung a Roch Voisine song. Anybody, besides Kevin, know who Roch Voisine is?

Hey Jer,

Happy belated Pesach!
Negro, did you guys eat stuffed peppers and gefilte fish again? Who found the matzo?
Jer, the pictures are fabu. You might have an alternate career! Imagine, traveling around Europe and taking pictures for a living. I'm trying to live vicariously through you as the semester's winding down here. Why does teaching have to be part of our jobs? :)
Anyway, don't feel lonely! Enjoy your time away from CU and the associated craziness...remember that you do have to go back there, and perhaps that will help!

Jer

Don't worry. You're not forgotten. Happy Passover.
We spent the first night at Stan & Adele's house and the second at the animal hospital with Bailey..don't worry..he's okay. He had mild case of pneumonia. Two days of intravenous fluids and antibiotics worked and we brought him home Sat. aft. That night he and Soocie put up with little Prince running around the house. Bailey ignored him and Soocie stood her ground and showed him whose house this was!!! What a circus!
Sounds like everything is going well. Great pictures. Watch out for those lonely old men though.
Love xoxo :)

Ok, ok, I'll stop whining about comments now ;)

I think my last passover was spent at Paul's with you guys (Negro & JER) It must have been 3 or 4 yrs ago! I don't remember stuffed peppers, just hardboiled eggs & a bowl of eggplant. This years' seder must have been interesting. Any info on how his family took the news? Did any of them know beforehand?

I'm glad you guys like the photos! I'm having fun pretending that I'm on assignment for National Geographic :)

I'm in Turin now. I'll post soon about this place (and the unbelievable collection they have here!) I've had more espresso today than I probably should have had, so I just need to wait for the jittery fingers to stop jittering in order to type more!! But let me just say that this place (the dept, the people & their skeletal collection) is really great :)

I note the wireframe Homo erectus lives in a wireframe house. Forgive my ignorance - I'm a geek, not an anthropologist - but was H. erectus a bit too dense to put wallboard across the joists? No wonder they went extinct - they froze to death! Maybe if they threw an R-30 panther hide or two over that thing, they'd still be around...

Ben wants more photos of you with the Shapecam! Maybe swing by Bolzano and get one of you and Otzi, since you seem to have a thing going with "the older gentlemen". hee hee!

Missing you in the lab!

Jodi--
Sorry for the delay in posting. I'm pre-limming and sick. But getting better. It was great chatting online with you last week and having you be the very first person I could share my fab news with.

Your pictures are so great! You should use that Terra Amata stuff in your 102 lectures. The students will put you on the "excellent" list for sure. Keep blogging, I need to stay up to date on the life and times of Bugaboo.

Oh my, I'm related to freaks.

No idea what the censored posts were about. Maybe Negro was getting crazy with the power of being a contributor?

Daniel: I don't remember anything in our little contract about photo"s"... ;)

The blog is censored!?!? By whom... the FCC? If that is the case, there is no way we will be able to post any information or pictures from my upcoming pre-lim party. If there is a pre-lim party. (S.L. has said nothing about it). In fact, this post may be deleted because I even mentioned the pre-lim party.

Melissa: Here's how it'll all go down.

You won't hear a thing about your prelim party, and neither will anybody else until maybe a couple of hours before the party is supposed to start. When an email is sent, you won't be included in the list. This is all to protect your feelings, just in case the party needs to be cancelled. (If you ask, you will be told this. Do not ask right before your defense is planned to start. Trust me on this ;)

But there will be a party. And it'll be good. Rob may even stay awake through it.

Oh yeah - bring treats into your defense for for your committee members. It's at 9am, right? I suggest coffee & bagels (it worked for Martin!)

You'll be great. (You may even get that hug from the SL.) I'll be thinking of you! Email me & tell me how it went. Blog some photos!

I actually heard news of the party today. Saw S.L. at the symposium and he made reference to the party twice. What I heard about the party is that there is going to be meat there. Negro may have had some influence in making that decision. Maybe when I defend my dissertation we can have a total raw-vegan party. That would be awesome. Really, I'll be happy if S.A. brings the red stuff he gets in Ethiopia and if there's some good beer.

Getting through this pre-lim stuff has been difficult without you. Now I've got to do a power point presentation for the defense. What's the deal? I think this is something new they have started. Booooo. Okay, better go work on that....

What's the red stuff SA gets in Ethiopia? Whatever it is, save me some.
